To begin, the artist uses a sheet of Canson Figueras with a linen-like texture, ideal for painting directly in oil without any preparation.
There’s no need to apply gesso or an undercoat – the surface of the paper is already perfectly suited for this technique.
Using a medium flat brush and Georgian Primary Yellow, he applies an even layer across the whole surface.
This first luminous layer brings all the warmth of the future sunset.
Let it dry slightly before continuing, or work wet-in-wet if you prefer spontaneous blending.
On the dry background, he applies another layer of yellow to the lower part of the sheet, then adds Vermilion Red in the middle and Crimson Red at the top.
The three colours are then blended together with the same brush to create a smooth, glowing gradient, true to the light of an evening sky.
Tip: Wipe your brush regularly to keep the colours clean and the transitions soft and harmonious.
Once the sky is well blended and touch-dry, the artist moves to the lower part of the painting using a smaller flat brush.
With a mix of Burnt Umber and Crimson Red, he sketches the horizon line.
The contrast between the warm tones of the sky and the earthy browns already creates a beautiful sense of depth and atmosphere.
He then paints the trunk of the parasol pine – strong and slender – and builds its characteristic canopy.
With a fan brush and the same colour mix, the artist emphasises certain areas of the trunk and foliage.
Tip: For a more natural effect, you may vary the brown tones slightly by adding a touch of Ultramarine Blue or Sap Green.
The Canson Figueras paper withstands multiple layers perfectly and preserves the vibrancy of the colours, even in thicker applications.
Canson Figueras* paper, combined with Daler-Rowney Georgian oil paints, offers an exceptional painting experience: colours remain bright, drying is controlled, and the paper’s texture enhances every brushstroke.
Try painting your own parasol pine, or let your imagination take you to other Mediterranean landscapes.
It’s not about perfection – it’s about the joy of seeing the light come to life beneath your brush.
