Materials Used:

  • Paper: Canson Mixed Media Artist 300g
  • Paint: Maimeri Blu Watercolour
  • Brushes: Princeton AquaElite
  • Coloured Pencils: Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor
  • Charcoal Pencil: Lyra Rembrandt Charcoal

Step 1: Sketching with Charcoal

To create this illustration, use Canson Mixed Media Artist paper. This thick paper is ideal for handling watercolour moisture while allowing the use of coloured pencils and charcoal.

Using the Lyra Rembrandt Charcoal pencil, sketch the basic composition. By drawing different circles and some geometric shapes, you will outline the general shape of the squirrel. Keep this sketch light so it can be easily corrected or softened before applying watercolour.

Step 2: Applying Watercolour

Apply Maimeri Blu watercolour with your Princeton AquaElite brush to establish the base colours: green for the background, grey for the branch, and orange/brown for the squirrel. Thanks to the quality of the paper, the colours blend smoothly without warping.

Step 3: Enhancing Shadows and Details

Next, deepen the shadows and refine details by layering more concentrated watercolour. Also, use Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor coloured pencils to add precision and contrast.

Step 4: Final Adjustments and Finishing Touches

To complete the illustration, retrace some contours with a dark brown coloured pencil to enhance contrast and add depth. Add highlights by softening some areas or applying white ink with a brush to brighten certain parts of the watercolour.

This step-by-step process helps create a rich and vibrant illustration, making the most of Canson Mixed Media Artist 300g paper and the selected materials. Experiment with these techniques to bring your own creations to life!
